Texas Shooting Kills Two, Injures Ten
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while Midland Mayor Lori Blong confirmed the suspect had also been killed by the time the situation was brought under control.
"The active shooter incident has been resolved, and the suspect is confirmed deceased," the City of Midland announced on Facebook.
The violence originated in southeast Midland before spreading across the city's southern corridor. Nine of the wounded were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, where four underwent surgery. Five patients in stable condition have since been discharged, a hospital spokesperson said.
The suspect was identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, who had already been sought by authorities on charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer following an incident on Wednesday in which he allegedly opened fire on officers during a vehicle pursuit, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The City of Midland said on Facebook that the scene remains active, with road closures expected to stay in place for the foreseeable future as investigators continue their work. Residents were urged to avoid the area and stay abreast of official updates.
A family reunification center has been established at Midland Memorial Hospital, authorities confirmed.
