Statement from Premier on Progress Monitoring Committee’s Third Annual Report

CANADA, August 31 - NOTE: The following is a statement from Premier Tim Houston on the Progress Monitoring Committee annual report released today, August 31.

Today, the Progress Monitoring Committee released its third and final annual report on progress being made to address recommendations in the final report from the Mass Casualty Commission (MCC). This report represents a tremendous amount of care, detail and dedication to monitor the progress on these recommendations.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to Chair Myra Freeman and everyone who has served on the Progress Monitoring Committee during its three-year mandate.

In particular, I want to acknowledge family members of victims – those who served on the committee and those who contributed in other ways. You helped make sure this work is grounded in what truly matters: the lives of your loved ones. Thank you for your involvement, dedication, selflessness and strength.

This year’s report outlines actions and initiatives our government has taken in response to the recommendations made by the MCC. It demonstrates our commitment to work across government and with community to support those who are grieving, to better respond to emergencies and critical incidents, and to reform policing services.

Nova Scotia is on track in many areas, and we’ve made significant investments to support this work. But we know the work doesn’t stop here.

We must persist in our efforts to address the epidemic of intimate partner violence and its causes. We must break down barriers and improve safety and resilience in our communities. We must continue to work together to realize the significant and systemic change that is required to address complex and interconnected issues facing our society.

This is the legacy of the Progress Monitoring Committee as it concludes its three-year mandate. Your work has helped create a strong foundation for governments to follow.

Your diligence and care have helped turn intention into action and action into progress.

We will not settle for mere progress. We want to make real, meaningful change. We accept the responsibility of carrying this work forward to make our communities safer.

Real change is how we honour and remember those who lost their lives on April 18 and 19, 2020, and those we have lost since the mass casualty. We will never forget them and everyone whose lives have been changed by devastating acts of violence.
