FCS welcomes new CSM, says farewell to outgoing CSM

FORT JACKSON, S.C. – The U.S. Army Finance Corps and Finance and Comptroller School welcomed a new command sergeant major and farewelled the outgoing in a change of responsibility ceremony Sept. 18 at the Soldier Support Institute.

Command Sgt. Maj. Craig Rodland transferred enlisted responsibilities to CSM Kereen Bennett officiated by Chief of the Corps and Commandant Col. Thomas Ruth III.

“Every good thing that happened under my watch happened because NCOs (noncommissioned officers) and Soldiers did the actual work – the hard, unglamorous work of financial management for this Army, every day, mostly without notice,” said Rodland. “The Finance Corps doesn’t run on any one CSM; it runs on a motto we all wear for a reason – To Support and Serve – and on the Soldiers who live it long after the names on the door change.”

Rodland retires from the U.S. Army after 25 years of service.

“The CSM is instrumental to provide commanders and leaders a finance warrior who can deploy, fight, and win large-scale combat operations,” said Ruth. “They have a key part in ensuring those Soldiers have the right doctrine, the right unit structure and design, the right equipment and systems; while nesting finance into overall sustainment for a finance corps of 2040.

“During his (Rodland) time, he has had a lasting impact on the school, the Corps and the cadre; he rewrote the Finance song, which we sing at all graduations,” Ruth said. “He was instrumental in the developing of FM 4-80 (Financial Management Operations) and ATP 4-80-1 (Financial Management technical publications); he leaned forward with the brigade FDU (force design update) equipment requirements; and created and published the Finance Corps Enlisted Guide and added KD (key developmental) positions for NCOs.”

Bennett came to FCS from Austin, Texas, where she was the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command Headquarters Battalion command sergeant major.

“She (CSM Bennett) joined the Army after high school graduation to travel, continue her education and to build a better future for herself; you must respect that,” said Ruth. “CSM Bennett comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Bennett is the 14th Finance Corps Command Sergeant Major responsible for discipline, leadership, welfare, and acting as the principal advisor to the commandant.

“Every Soldier I have led, every leader who challenged me, every mentor who believed in me, and every family member and friend who supported me has shaped the leader I am today,” said Bennett. “I want our Soldiers to be proud of the profession they have chosen;
I want our NCOs to continue developing technically and tactically proficient leaders; and I want our Finance Corps to remain known throughout the Army for excellence, professionalism, and unwavering integrity.

“I am ready to get to work,” she added. “Let us continue to build on our rich history, sharpen our readiness, and take care of one another every single day.”

FCS provides the U.S. Army with military and civilian leaders trained in financial management, and develops complementary concepts, doctrine, and organization for financial management in support of American armed forces.
