Lost in 1951, Korean War Soldier Returns Home to Texas for Final Rest

FORT KNOX, Ky. – The remains of U. S. Army Cpl. Andrew R. Tischler, 21, killed during the Korean War, will be interred at St. Thomas Cemetery in Pilot Point, Texas, Services and interment are being coordinated by Slay Memorial Funeral Center.

In 1951, Tischler was assigned to Company F, 2nd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.

In spring 1951, as part of the UNC counteroffensive, commanding officer of the X Corps, ordered the 3rd Inf. Div. to secure a portion of a pass on the Soksa-ri–Habae-jae road and a junction four miles east of Habae-jae where the Soksa-ri–Habae-jae road connected with another road through the Taebaek mountains. Those two roads represented the best withdrawal routes available to the retreating Chinese People’s Volunteer Army.

During this counteroffensive, Tischler had been a member of a rifle platoon on a road march near Taewol, R.O.K., and had fallen out of the patrol just before Korean People’s Army16 forces began firing.

When the platoon returned to Co. F’s positions, Tischler could not be found and was reported MIA.

Upon review of his status one year later, the U.S. Army decided to continue him in MIA status.

Without information to support a continued presumption of survival, the U.S. Army issued a presumptive finding of death on 31 December 1953.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency accounted for Tischler on May 6, 2026.

U.S. Army Human Resources Command’s Past Conflict Repatriations Branch plays a vital role in the process of identifying, locating and contacting subsequent generation family members of Soldiers missing or killed in action during WWII and the Korean War to positively identify previously undiscovered or unknown remains.
